The Shri Hanuman Chalisa is a powerful devotional hymn dedicated to Lord Hanuman, the supreme devotee of Lord Rama. Composed by the great saint Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century, the word "Chalisa" is derived from "Chalis," meaning forty, as the hymn consists of 40 poetic verses (chaupais) written in the Awadhi language. Millions chant these verses daily to invoke divine protection, clear the mind of negativity, and drive away fear. --- DOHA (Invocation) श्रीगुरु चरन सरोज रज, निज मनु मुकुरु सुधारि। बरनउँ रघुबर बिमल जसु, जो दायकु फल चारि॥ Shri Guru Charan Saroj Raj, Nij Manu Mukuru Sudhari। Baranau Raghubar Bimal Jasu, Jo Dayaku Phal Chari॥ Meaning: Cleansing the mirror of my mind with the dust from the lotus feet of the Divine Guru, I describe the unblemished glory of Lord Rama, which bestows the four fruits of life (Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha). बुद्धिहीन तनु जानिके, सुमिरौं पवन-कुमार। बल बुधि बिद्या देहु मोहिं, हरहु कलेस बिकार॥ Buddhiheen Tanu Janike, Sumirau Pavan-Kumar। Bal Budhi Vidya Dehu Mohi, Harahu Kalesa Bikaar॥ Meaning: Knowing myself to be ignorant, I remember you, O Son of the Wind. Grant me strength, wisdom, and knowledge, and remove all my afflictions and impurities. --- CHAUPAI (The 40 Verses) 1. जय हनुमान ज्ञान गुन सागर। जय कपीस तिहुँ लोक उजागर॥ Jai Hanuman Gyan Guna Sagar। Jai Kapis Tihun Lok Ujagar॥ Meaning: Victory to you, O Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue. Victory to the Lord of the Monkeys, who illuminates the three worlds. 2. राम दूत अतुलित बल धामा। अंजनि-पुत्र पवनसुत नामा॥ Ram Doot Atulit Bal Dhama। Anjani-Putra Pavansut Nama॥ Meaning: You are the divine messenger of Lord Rama, the repository of immeasurable strength, known as the son of Mother Anjani and the son of the Wind God. 3. महाबीर बिक्रम बजरंगी। कुमति निवार सुमति के संगी॥ Mahabir Bikram Bajrangi। Kumati Nivar Sumati Ke Sangi॥ Meaning: You are the great hero, valiant and possessing a body as strong as a thunderbolt. You dispel evil thoughts and are the companion of good and pure wisdom. 4. कंचन बरन बिराज सुबेसा। कानन कुंडल कुंचित केसा॥ Kanchan Baran Biraj Subesa। Kanan Kundal Kunchit Kesa॥ Meaning: Your complexion is like molten gold, and you are splendidly attired. You wear rings in your ears and have beautiful, curly hair. 5. हाथ बज्र औ ध्वजा बिराजै। काँधे मूँज जनेऊ साजै॥ Hath Bajra Au Dhvaja Biraje। Kandhe Moonj Janeu Saje॥ Meaning: In your hands, you hold a thunderbolt and a banner, and a sacred thread of Munja grass adorns your shoulder. 6. संकर सुवन केसरीनंदन। तेज प्रताप महा जग बंदन॥ Sankar Suvan Kesari Nandan। Tej Pratap Maha Jag Bandan॥ Meaning: You are an incarnation of Lord Shiva and the son of Kesari. Your radiant glory is revered by the entire world. 7. बिद्यावान गुनी अति चातुर। राम काज करिबे को आतुर॥ Bidyavan Guni Ati Chatur। Ram Kaj Karibe Ko Aatur॥ Meaning: You are highly learned, virtuous, and supremely clever. You are always eager to fulfill the tasks of Lord Rama. 8. प्रभु चरित्र सुनिबे को रसिया। राम लखन सीता मन बसिया॥ Prabhu Charitra Sunibe Ko Rasiya। Ram Lakhan Sita Man Basiya॥ Meaning: You delight in listening to the glorious pastimes of the Lord. Lord Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita reside eternally in your heart. 9. सूक्ष्म रूप धरि सियहिं दिखावा। बिकट रूप धरि लंक जरावा॥ Sukshma Roop Dhari Siyahi Dikhava। Bikat Roop Dhari Lank Jarava॥ Meaning: You assumed a microscopic form to appear before Mother Sita, and you took on a massive, terrifying form to burn the city of Lanka. 10. भीम रूप धरि असुर सँहारे। रामचंद्र के काज सँवारे॥ Bhima Roop Dhari Asur Sanhare। Ramchandra Ke Kaj Sanvare॥ Meaning: Assuming a colossal and formidable form, you destroyed the demons and successfully completed the missions of Lord Sri Rama. 11. लाय सजीवन लखन जियाये। श्रीरघुबीर हरषि उर लाये॥ Laye Sanjivan Lakhan Jiyaye। Shriraghubir Harashi Ur Laye॥ Meaning: You brought the Sanjivani herb to save Lakshmana's life, and a joyous Lord Rama embraced you to His heart. 12. रघुपति कीन्ही बहुत बड़ाई। तुम मम प्रिय भरतहि सम भाई॥ Raghupati Kinhi Bahut Badai। Tum Mam Priya Bharatahi Sam Bhai॥ Meaning: Lord Rama praised you highly, saying, "You are as dear to me as my own brother Bharata." 13. सहस बदन तुम्हरो जस गावैं। अस कहि श्रीपति कंठ लगावैं॥ Sahas Badan Tumharo Jas Gavai। As Kahi Shripati Kanth Lagavai॥ Meaning: "Even the thousand-headed serpent Shesha sings your glory," said the Lord of Lakshmi (Rama) as He embraced you. 14. सनकादिक ब्रह्मादि मुनीसा। नारद सारद सहित अहीसा॥ Sanakadik Brahmadi Munisa। Narad Sarad Sahit Ahisa॥ Meaning: Sages like Sanaka, gods like Brahma, and the great hermits, along with Narada, Goddess Saraswati, and the King of Serpents... 15. जम कुबेर दिगपाल जहाँ ते। कबि कोबिद कहि सके कहाँ ते॥ Jam Kuber Digpal Jahan Te। Kabi Kobid Kahi Sake Kahan Te॥ Meaning: Yama (god of death), Kubera (god of wealth), the guardian deities of all directions, poets, and scholars completely fail to adequately describe your glory. 16. तुम उपकार सुग्रीवहिं कीन्हा। राम मिलाय राज पद दीन्हा॥ Tum Upkar Sugreevahi Kinha। Ram Milay Raj Pad Dinha॥ Meaning: You rendered a great service to Sugreeva by uniting him with Lord Rama, which led to him regaining his royal throne. 17. तुम्हरो मंत्र बिभीषन माना। लंकेस्वर भए सब जग जाना॥ Tumharo Mantra Vibhishan Mana। Lankesvar Bhaye Sab Jag Jana॥ Meaning: Vibhishana accepted your counsel and became the King of Lanka, a fact known throughout the entire world. 18. जुग सहस्र जोजन पर भानू। लील्यो ताहि मधुर फल जानू॥ Yug Sahasra Yojan Par Bhanu। Lilyo Tahi Madhur Phal Janu॥ Meaning: You swallowed the sun, which is millions of miles away, mistaking it for a sweet, delicious fruit. 19. प्रभु मुद्रिका मेलि मुख माहीं। जलधि लाँघि गये अचरज नाहीं॥ Prabhu Mudrika Meli Mukh Mahi। Jaladhi Langhi Gaye Acharaj Nahi॥ Meaning: Keeping the Lord's ring in your mouth, you leaped across the vast ocean—there is no surprise in this at all. 20. दुर्गम काज जगत के जेते। सुगम अनुग्रह तुम्हरे तेते॥ Durgam Kaj Jagat Ke Jete। Sugam Anugrah Tumhare Tete॥ Meaning: All the difficult and impossible tasks in this world become easy by your grace. 21. राम दुआरे तुम रखवारे। होत न आज्ञा बिनु पैसारे॥ Ram Duare Tum Rakhvare। Hot Na Agya Binu Paisare॥ Meaning: You are the gatekeeper at the door of Lord Rama's divine abode.
